If you choose to provide us with personal information -- as in an e-mail to the Treasurer, Deputy Treasurer, or someone else, or by filling out a form with your personal information and submitting it to us through our website -- we use that information to respond to your message and to help us get you the information you have requested. We treat emails the same way we treat letters sent to the Department. We maintain our records in accordance with our obligations as defined by applicable Virginia statutes, including, but not limited to, the Government Data Collection and Dissemination Practices Act, the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, and by any applicable U.S. federal laws. We are required to maintain many documents under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act for historical purposes, but we do not collect personal information for any purpose other than to respond to you. We only share the information you give us with another government agency if your inquiry relates to that agency, or as otherwise required by law. Moreover, we do not create individual profiles with the information you provide or give it to any private organizations.

During the Inquiry phase, you are asked to provide us with more information. The Inquiry Form is designed to provide us with the information required to identify any of the property which may belong to you. This information is used only to respond to your inquiry and get you the information you need to make a claim.
