Virginia Quarter
The Virginia quarter, the tenth coin released under the 50 States Quarters Program, was put into circulation on October 16, 2000. The design - which was selected by the public - honors our nation's oldest colony, Jamestown, Virginia. The selected design features the three ships, Susan Constant, Godspeed, and the Discovery which brought the first English settlers to Jamestown.
The Fifty States Commemorative Coin Program provides for the redesign of the reverse side of the quarter with designs emblematic of each of the 50 states. The new quarters began to be circulated in 1999. Each quarter will be released according to the order in which each of states ratified the U.S. Constitution or were admitted to the Union.
A launch ceremony was held at Jamestown Settlement to celebrate the release of the new coin. After multiple design and comment solicitation processes this design became the overwhelming choice of the people. As liaison to the Mint for Virginia, Treasury is very proud to be involved in the entire coin selection and development process. The U.S. Mint is also very excited since Virginia is the first state to develop and launch their quarter with such public participation.
